South Padre Island Vacation in November 08; roach Concerns?

My husband and I are taking a vacation to South Padre Island in November to be with our cousin at his destination wedding. My husband and I have been feverishly searching TripAdvisor and the like for reviews on hotels, B&Bs and condominiums. One of the things we keep seeing in these reviews are complaints of vermin and roaches as well as other pests. Are roaches a big problem down in SPI? I would think that businesses would be held to a higher cleanliness code than to let this be a problem or are locals just used to this part of life in SPI?? Anyone who lives or has vacationed in this area that can explain the roach infestations, your input is highly valued. How common are these infestations and what can we do to avoid them... hubs and I are VERY squeamish when it comes to nocturnal creepy crawlies!! Also we have concerns about food quality if this is such a big problem in lodging chains! Ugh! Thank you in advance!
